Your Name (2017)

Your Name is a beautiful animated film about a teenage boy and girl who somehow manages to swap bodies and is both emotional and incredibly beautiful.

If you have not guessed it yet we are going to Japan. The masters of anime. This movie is written and directed by Makato Shinkai, best known for 2013s The Garden of Words. After Studio Ghiblis Hayao Miayzaki retired for the third time in 2013 and then returned to animation their movies has not been that good. Well there is a new king in town.

What can I start to say about the story in Your Name? Mitsuha is the young highschool girl living in rural Japan and Taki is living in Tokyo, and one day they wake up having swapped bodies. They live two completely different lives, and are quite different people, and one very important question arises. Who is this other person? Sometimes during the film it can get a little problematic realizing how is in each others body here and there, and I found myself a little bit confused in the beginning. Also the plot may be a little familiar. I can understand if people find the plot a little bit complicated at times. But when the entire story turns around and you realize how it works. it is a well written masterpiece. But the way Shinaki plays with your head with these plot twists really make it the best animated film to come from Japan.

The animation in this is beautiful. It is easily among the prettiest anime I have ever seen. A beautiful soundtrack added in with some gorgeous lighting and a whole lot of details makes this a little piece of animation art. EVen if you don’t like animated films this movie should be seen just for looking incredible. It is colourful. It is gorgeous, and it is emotionally powerful

The slow pacing for the first forty minutes may seem off-putting to some people, but the story is so good. After a while we get plotwists and plotwists. Shinkai also manages to play on pretty much every emotion a person can possibly have in the total hour and forty fives minutes the film lasts. The story really sticks by you and he has manages to make one of the best anime films to date. Maybe one of the reasons why it has passed Ghiblis Spirited Away as the highest grossing anime film worldwide.

The other big problem with this film is that they tend to ruin the beautiful piano soundtrack with some horrible j-pop music. Here we have this gorgeous moody piano soundtrack, and on occasions they kill every tear in my eye when they add some horrible cheesy pop music. Why? I hate that music.

This is a difficult movie to write something good about. I can’t focus that much on the technical parts cause I am not an animator, I can only focus on the story. But Your Name is so powerful it really should not be written about. It should be read. experienced first hand

Your Name will make you smile, it will make you laugh, it will make you an emotional nerve wreck and Makato Shinkai has proven him self to be the new king of anime. And the fact that himself is being overly critical of this film calling it “incomplete and unbalanced” really gives me high hopes for Japanese animation these next years. Also the cutest ending to a film to date.

Do me a favour. Go see this film.

Score: 10/10
