The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

Martin Freeman stars in this british comedic sci-fi film together with Mos Def, Zoey Deschannel and Stephen Fry. It is the story about the destruction of the Earth.

This movie is weird. So this review is gonna be weird. It is a nice way to honor this example of British stupidity at it’s finest.

So. We start off approximately 10 minutes before the destruction of planet Earth, or to be more precise we start of with a musical number sung by dolphins called “So Long and Thanks for all the Fish” The Dolphins are aware of Earths doom and tries to warn the ignorant humans before they leave Earth and jump into space.

So yeah 10 minutes before Planet Earth is dead. We meet Arthur played by Martin Freeman and his friends Ford who is actually an alien journalist working on The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, a universal guide-book. Ford takes Arthur into space as Hitchikers and the craziness begin.

But that is enough on the story, let’s start with the casting. Alan Rickman plays Marvin, the Paranoid Android. a clinically depressed Robot and he is great. Roles and movies like this are written for actors of Alan Rickmans caliber. Stephen Fry is the narrator in the guide-book and tells the story of the movie as well. Sam Rockwell is the President of The Universe, and one of the madest characters you will ever see. He is incredible and you just gotta love him. Zoey Deschanel plays Trillian. the love interest and female protagonist. And we have Bill Nighy as the God Slartibartfast.

There are some characters worth mentioning here. Martin Freeman is good in everything, and he still fits the stereotypical brit who just wants some peace and calm very well. His chemistry with Mos Def, Zoey Deschanel and Sam Rockwell are also realistic and shows some splendid acting. The all star cast of this film helps to lift the manuscript that sometimes may feel a little to dumb to people liking. but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Alan Rickmans depressed Android and Sam Rockwells President of The Universe are two of the best portrayed characters in British Cinematic History.

There are so many weird things we could talk about in this movie but we are gonna focus on the technical parts. Some of the CGI in this movie is done pretty well and the screenplay is gold. After having read the book and how incredibly stupid it is, I must say that they have done a good job making a movie just as amazingly dumb.

This is british sarcasm at it’s best, and it is only Britain who can do that. It is an incredibly likeable film with splendid cinematography and the amazing use of Mise-en-scene that are gonna make you giggle.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a movie that is hard to write properly about, because it must be experienced first hand. not described. It is a piece of British movie history and something everyone who loves dumb comedy and dumb sci-fi should check out. You will find yourself laughing hard often. And remember. 42 is the answer to everything

Score: 8/10
